Oil galley/port plugged?
Ok, I know I'm becoming OCD over this but I noticed that the oil port (or galley) at the rear of the block was plugged with what looks like black RTV.
It's the same on both sides. They would be the small hole just above the bolt hole at the rear of the block. The front ones are clear.
There are matching holes in the heads and gaskets. Searching for pictures of the block on the web I can find some where these ports are not even there (older blocks?)
I read something about these engines only being oiled from the front and the RAVE diagram only shows oil flow from the front to the rockers.
Should I leave well enough alone or is it an issue?
Thanks,
Mark
Mark,
Yes these are only oiled from the front. The heads have holes in both ends so that they are interchangeable from side to side. In fact, you want to make sure that you put your heads back on the same side that they came off of because over time the unused port typically plugs/gums up. If you are putting on new/rebuilt heads the side to side doesn't matter (ie - you don't have to know the original placement)but to be safe check the portto make sure it was cleaned.
