Default Oil light after first oil change

Hey guys,

I just changed the oil on my relatively new to me Disco 2. I drained the oil, replaced the oil filter, making sure it was full as could be, and filled the engine with about 6 quarts of Shell Rotella 15w40. When I turned on the car initially, there was an oil pressure light that only stayed on for about a second. It's never come on in the 10,000 miles I've driven my car. I've been very paranoid about oil pressure since my Jag engine (AJV8) blew up on me a few months ago. I assume it's just the oil pump getting oil to the engine momentarily but I want to be sure.

BTW, here's some pics. This is by far the best car I've ever owned. I bought it bone stock from a friend in perfect condition and it's become a great trail rig.

Thanks,
Jacob

Yeah if it was just on for a second after the change that’s ok. It’s best to drain the sump and then refill it before removing the oil filter. Usually it’s best to put some oil in the filter as you did before installing. If you remove the filter while the sump is empty it’s possible for the oil in the pickup tube, etc to drain back into the pan causing a dry start.

Are you saying you went 10,000 miles between oil changes?

Or did you mean it's the first time you did it yourself?

Nah, I just let the shop I usually go to do it 5,000 miles ago, also with synthetic.

I'd consider a second or two within a normal range/amount of time for the oil pressure sender to receive correct reading after filter/oil change.

I never had this problem after an oil change. Maybe your operating oil pressure is too close to the limit. If you are concerned, you could install an oil pressure sensor and monitor it as you drive.

On my older RRC/D1's the oil light goes out within 5sec (normal). D2 is usually a bit quicker, but during an oil change it can stay on longer until pressure is restored and any air pockets are removed from the filter housing/pickup tube.
