Oil pressure switch is what turns on the light, on passenger side of engine near front. Remove switch and put in temporary oil PSI gauge. Wire to sensor could be grounded and that will also keep light on. See attached pix from RAVE electrical library and the world's cleanest Disco - it is C0187. Oil gauge should read over 10 PSI idle hot, and 50 PSI at 2000 hot.

Thanks I will do this the 1st thing in the AM. I bought an oil pressue guage and may consider installing it instead of the idiot light. Would hate to have to redo the pump installation BUT if needed I at least can do it faster the second time....... Damn is that photo of that motor NICE.

If your switch was not hooked up, and wire was sitting just right, and touching a ground, light would be on. Also, if wiring harness got skint, light could stay on. You can meter the switch to ground, wire off, with an ohm meter, short = switch closed. Be careful under there with rotating parts. Having your fingers make a trip around the serpantine belt will spoil your day.

Did you prime the oil pump with grease first?
If you just install the pump and do not prime it it will not pump oil.

but, if you pack that thing solid with gease it also will not work. There was some one on here that had to take theirs back apart becase they had packed it so full of vasoline it would not pump it out. I just coated mine with a thin coating of grease and as much gear oil as I could get in it and primed the system by cranking with fuel pump fuse pulled.

Yes, thank you, that is what I meant but did not clarify.
Thank you for setting the record straight.

Here's what I've done and it worked great. Pull the threaded plug on the the front cover which is located just below the oil pressure sending unit. Take a small hand oil pump and insert the filler neck in the now open front cover hole and fill up the oil pump with oil until it over flows out the open hole. You must make sure your oil sump has oil in it prior to doing this so the oil your pumping in just doesn't backflow from the pump into the oil sump.

You also will not get oil pressure if you attempt verify pressure before start up by pulling your ignition fuse. The starter doesn't spin the engine fast enough to build any readable gauge pressure.
