Oil Pump
Well it has happened.
My 2003 Disco series II that falls in the VIN range noted in the Land Rover oil pump Technical Alert has been hit.
Meaning, the oil pump failed @ 63k.
This past week end traveling over the mountain pass the oil pump failed.
The oil light came on, the engine lost power and began making
loud, grumbling, metal sounds.
$550 tow back to Seattle and a mechanic confirmation sealed the doom.
The Land Rover Dealer stated "yes" they can fix it at my cost estimated to be $7000 to $10,000.
Of course I played the Technical Alert card which resulted in a polite "so".
I have contacted Land Rover of North America. They opened a case and are "investigating". I played the technical alert card of which they requested a copy. I provided it. They stated they would get back to me in a couple of days.
So, I wait with a very nice looking lawn ornament.
I have had two great years with my Disco.
It has played the city dweller and the very rough mountian dweller.
I hope Land Rover will stand behind their product.
It would be a terrible lack of ethic to make a product, admit in writing that it is defective and then not make it right.
Well, I will find out.
More to come.

Some of the engines fail, not all. I hate to say it, but I agree with Mike. This is the reason you research before you buy.
If you have serviced your truck at the dealer all of the time and regularly, they have the option of doing a good faith repair, but it is up to them. I would start looking for a used engine. You can get a used 04 or any P-38 HSE.
Not sure where you are, but this guy has a block and crank you may be able to use....
