water pump, oil pump
hey,
what water pump do you guys like? I usually go thru BPUtah, and they have one that's supposed to be much better than OEM. it cost's about $150. Is it worth it? I always have an ultragauge going to keep an eye on coolant temps, and I'm not afraid to spend a little more on parts if they are good to go
I'm guessing I should at least check the oil pump/timing cover for scoring and gear failure?
replace the timing chain while all this is open?
thanks so much

Look up GMB pumps they use roller bearing insteed of ball bearings, and use a spring loaded mechanical seal insteed of just packing. I have ask about the BPU pump and all they can say is it has a bronze impeeler. Not why bronze is better, just that its bronze! Check out the GMB pump.jmho
Bronze is used because it stands up to cavitation better than some other materials. I believe stainless is better still, but expensive.
Cavitation is tiny near vacuum bubbles which pit the surface of an impeller. Any impeller than is not 100% efficient (all of them) will produce cavitation to some degree. Just like an outboard boat motor spinning too fast and producing bubbles. They are destroying the prop.
How important it is in our cars, I don't know. But that's why bronze is a bit of a buzz word.
What is the impeller materiel in 'other' pumps?

mostly you will find bronze used where portable water is use, the OEM is a steel impeller. There is a US brand coolsteel or something but last i check they end with a D1; it was s great design with an impeller made to flow twice the rate of water
ps: that is not the definition of cavitation:

thanks guys,
I'm gonna replace the oil pump, along with the timing chain and cover and a couple sprockets. Do you think the oil pump comes pre lubed and ready to go? or does it need to be opened up and packed with gear oil or whatever is used. I've seen some pack it with vasiline too

yes, I bought the whole new housing, which includes the new gear pump already inside. My D2 is in the death vin range with the factory dowl defect causing engines to blow up. I figured it was time.
so anybody know if those are already packed with grease/gear oil etc? I guess my shop will open it anyway to inspect
I can't do the work, my body is a shell of what it was, and my right hand is near useless, so I take it to an indy shop in CT, and my buddy in chicago work on it when i'm out there
thanks
