Any DII engine will bolt right into your truck.
USED ENGINE WITH WARRANTY DISCOVERY 2001 99K 4.0L | eBay
USED ENGINE WITH WARRANTY DISCOVERY 2004 4.6L 79K | eBay
03 04 LAND ROVER DISCOVERY ENGINE 4.6L | eBay
All you need to do it make sure it is a Bosch engine, late '90's Range Rovers engines also bolt right in.
Range Rover SE BOSCH 4.0 Liter Engine 1998-UP | eBay
You need a different mechanic.
8 hours or so to swap engines, at $100 per hour (thats high) and a used engine for $3000 and you are still saving money over what they quoted you.

I'm just about ready to assemble my 04' engine after I had my oil pressure start to get low. I pulled the pan and found copper showing on all rod bearings. I've got 4500 invest in a turner reman block with every other moving component new. I should easily get another 80k out of this truck which makes the investment worth it even though it hurts now. If you happen to live in the Chicago land area pm me and I would be happy to look at the truck. I have a 4.6 block you could purchase to start your rebuild.

Hey fellas I appreciate all of the advice. I'm stuck in backwoods mississippi and there is only one shop within 150mi that works on Landrovers and they know that so they charge as much or more than the dealer charges. I'm definitely not going to use them, but that was the only place I could think to have it towed to.
I wish I knew more about these because I would take a look at it and try to figure it out, but I don't know what I'm looking at. I'd love to get it running again for a reasonable price, but don't really have many options where I'm at.
Anyone from the south that may have a lead on a good shop or used engine? Thanks!

I'm leaning towards buying one of those used engines with a 1 year warranty and trying to find a shop to install it. What's a reasonable install cost?
I love the truck. I've only owned it for 2 months, but it's immaculate with only 66k miles on it and I paid $9500 for it. I'm bummed this happened so quickly and I searched for a good 04 for a while to avoid this, but hey what can you do now. Just need to get it running again so I can enjoy it.

...into my 04? How difficult/expensive is a ECU flashing?
I mean for $1695 for the engine and $800 in labor I'm looking at $2500 to get back on the road with a 1 year warranty. Not bad...
