Default Oil seperator

Where is the oil seperator? I want to say its on the passenger side valve cover but Im not sure. Or is it on the opposite end on the same black hose thats connected up towards the throttle body. I can see alittle black plastic thingy that I guess could be the oil seperator in that area. The reason Im asking is one I dont know & two when I began taking the hose out of the passenger valve cover the hose swelled up on me when I lifted it about 1/16''. I stopped before I took it out completely in the event I cant get in back into the valve cover. But if this is where the oil seperator is I have no problem pulling the hose out. I have been doing the 60K tune up and all the mechanic work on my 02 Disco and I can say its not the funnest piece of equipment I have ever had to work on nor the easiest. So I have this " if it aint broke I aint fixing it " mentallity when I work on this thing. Thanks for any info...

On my '97 DI, the oil seperator is in the plastic nipple (1" long) on the pass side valve cover that the hose slips over.

It's baffled inside ( the old hose was soft, I replaced, putting a spring inside so the new one wouldn't collapse, as well as clamps both ends)

I'm not certain if your DII is the same

luck,greg

I just pulled both valve covers on my 03 d2. The pass side had the plastic seperator inside the cover. It was clogged. Took a couple of mins of soaking to get brake cleaner to finally shoot threw it. On mine you have to pull the vc to access it. What was weird was that driver side didn't have one and was just open and the hose just dumped right into the throttle body housing making the inside of the housing dirty. I might have to jam some Brillo or something in there.. I don't see the point of having a oil sep on one side and it just open on the other.

So you did take your valve cover off GARovee. I fiqured that would be the case, cause that hose swelled up big time when it starting sliding off the oil seperator coming out of the valve cover. Was it a difficult project to tackle, I have new valve cover gaskets that I bought from Altantic British that I was saving until I did my head gaskets. But it looks like I will using at least one of them now. I have a road trip planned on Thursday and driving this thing makes me nervous as hell when I venture off to far. The oil seperator is the only piece of the puzzle I have yet to do on the 60K tune-up on my 100K Disco. This may also solve a small oil leak I have if I install the oil seperator and a new valve cover gasket.

In a perfectly working system(which is rare with these LR's), air is only suppose to flow one direction. The hose on the pass side pulls vacuum, sucking air through the crankcase, from the intake off the driver side hose. Once the oil baffle becomes clogged on the pass side, it flows crankcase gases in reverse through the drivers side hose, into the throttle body. Hence all the oily mess at the butterfly valve. They should have put a oil baffle on both sides.

Ahhhh that makes sense now. Thanks for connecting that for me. I cleaned the oil sep out so hopefully all that crap will stay out of my throttle housing now. And yes, I had to pull the valve cover and yes it was a pain the ***. I have secondary air on mine and it was the worst most f'd up repair I've done yet to this truck. The sai pipes are pita's to remove and a lot had to be removed. Give yourself a good weekend to do it.

I have to clean mine so often, I'm thinking of removing the oil baffle, mounting a breather box on the firewall, and running both side's hoses to it and plug the ports on the intake. Then no more black gunk in the throttle body.

actually you take off the hose and drill a small pilot hole and then take it out and drill the whole way thru the thing and then replace with a new separator. Thats how we do it.

Works like a charm.

That sounds like a creative solution. I am very interested in it. What would you use for a breather box? Plugging the ports would be acceptable?
