Default Old gas sitting in the tank

My Discovery has been in my garage since last october as I have been working on it. When I first put it away I never thought it would be so long before she would be back on the road.

It currently has 3/4 tank full of 91 octane... I never put fuel stabilizer in it...

What should I do?

Thanks

Smell it and see if smells like varnish. There's a good chance it's got some issues, but you might be lucky.....it depends on how much ethanol the station had mixed in at the time you bought it. If it's junk you don't really want to run it through the system at all.

I've never tried so I don't know how hard it would be to get a tube down the fill neck, but you could siphon some out and see how it looks/smells. How long before you're going to drive it? If it's going to be a while, I'd get it out of there somehow. Either empty the tank completely or get it close and add 5 gallons or so with the marine stabil in it. The marine stuff does a better job with ethanol.

Otherwise you could remove the sending unit/pump and siphon it out that way.

I store several cars for 6+ months with marine stabil and it's never an issue, but you're either very close to, if not beyond the spoiling point since there's no additive in it. It's a pain, but it's better then having to deal with varnish/junk in your fuel system.

Does the rover run?

In any case, check a sample. If it's going to sit any longer, get it out of there. Make sure you either use a pump siphon or a clear tube if you're sucking it to get it started....a mouth full of gas is not a great time. With the clear tube, at least you can see it coming before it gets to you.

definitely a bad idea, but............I've repurposed as parts cleaner, paint thinner, fire starter, ant and snake killer, paint brush cleaner, tar and grease remover, etc

You're right, bad idea. Gasoline is way more flammable than the proper choice of solvents and a source of some number of carcinogens. I would avoid getting it on my skin or breathing the fumes as much as possible.

I'm cautious about flammables. I had a friend whose clothes caught fire after substituting gasoline for charcoal starter. It's way more explosive than charcoal starter. Also, when I was a kid (a long time ago) people kept a bottle of benzene in the garage for parts cleaner. No one thought anything of it. And then it was determined that exposure to benzene can cause leukemia. Benzene was a very good parts cleaning solvent, but not worth the risk.

Not to mention, the nasty long lasting stink if it gets on your clothes or skin.
