It always scares me when thread titles say "overheating" instead of "overheated". I haven't read through, but only hope as soon as it overheated once you never ran it again until you serviced some of the cooling system.

 

Pushed up the pressure on the coolant systm test. Held pressure fine. Found one single drip from the firewall heater hose. Tightened clamp that was it.

Idled her for a while and did some temp checks on the radiator. While it dosen't appear to be completely clogged anywhere there is definately less cooing going on below the outlet hose.

The top of the radiator there was 80-90 drop in temp from hot side to cold, not to bad. Mid radiator 50, bottom below outlet only 20 degrees. The outlet was only 40-50 degrees less then the inlet temp.

That dosen't seem very good accross the core since temp drops accross the top were pretty good. Guess I better get one ordered up.

Overheating as in overheated, stopped towed home. Did the heads and other repairs.

Runs fine in drive way. Hit the road gt a mile away at 55. Gets hot. Call wife, drag me home by strap. make repairs, and repeat the last.

I don't make it a habit to drive an overheated rig. Blew up an old K5 once doing that as kid. Leared the hard way. Unfortunately I usually lern that way.

 

180 degree thermostat
$80 or so.

Since that time, my OBDII port may desire.
But, gets none.

No need to connect to the OBDII.
No fan sounds at idle.
No check engine lights.

 

Be gentle with the new rad, the top "screw" goes into a very thin plastic boss in the side tank, will crack if you use wrong screw or more force than grandma. All the plastic coolant lines will be brittle.

As for "hot", the factory gauge only has cold, ?, and baking. It points at 50% from 130 to about 240F. I would make the case that you can drive with it way too hot, and the gauge will lie. Here's pix of two trucks, two different OBDII monitored temps, and note gauge reading is the same. A scanner or Ultra Gauge is a big help to see if you are making progress.
