Default Is this an overkill for oil?

Transplant from the BMW world right here and over there, we'd use this oil for our M motors. Granted, these aren't M motors in the slightest, but seems like most of the rhetoric here surrounding oil is wanting low winter weight with high weight when all is warmed up.

Any value running this over our beloved Rotella?

dunno, Rotella is a high detergent oil and I thing more than a few rover folks use it because of that feature. I use heavy weight Rotella because it knocks few decibels off the Rover tick.

I looked at your link and didn’t specs on the oil other than its BMW approved. Is it high detergent?

Anyway, it’s all the same when it’s dripping on your driveway I guess.

the 10W60 seems a little heavy for our engines. unless you are in Sahara and only driving during he hottest parts of the day.

15/40w Rotella is cheap, commonly sourced (even at truck stops out in the middle of nowhere), and it works very very well. I’ve been using it for probably close to 15 years now. LR3 wise I use Mobil1 5/30 full Synthetic, but Rover V8 wise Rotella works excellent!

Interesting, did not know that existed. We used to use 20w50 in our hot rod motors in the south, but that was back when everything had the zinc in it. I think one of the biggest advantages to the diesel oil besides the detergent package is the added zinc anti-wear used for the flat tappet cams. Extra viscosity is always good, but right now I would choose the diesel over any gas oil.

It all depends on oil temperature. When your engine runs at 220F you can use a lighter oil than at 250F. As long as engine oil stays below 220F a w40 oil is fine. Engine oil temp is a problem with 03/04 Discos, since they saved the oil cooler. After installing an oil cooler in my 04 Disco my oil temps are 20F lower (down from 240F) in average. Measure your oil temp and slow down if it gets to hot.
