Default P0302- perplexed

Hi,

Issue: I occasionally get a P0302- Cylinder 2 misfire code. Not sure what is causing the problem.
Symptoms: It seems to happen only after the car has been sitting for a week. CEL will come on right when I go to start it. Car starts right up and runs like a champ with plenty of power.
What has been done in past 6 months: 7mm magnacor wires, champion plugs, & lower and upper intake gaskets, coil pack. Always run premium fuel.
Can an injector cause this? What about a manifold leak?

Or a head gasket leak putting some coolant in that cylinder..... might try sneaking up on it next time it does it and pull that plug, see if it smells like antifreeze, or put some dye in the coolant, it will leave flecks of dye on the plug...

Just did the combustion chemical test and I have combustion gases entering the coolant system. My plan is to tear into this thing next weekend and replace the head gaskets. Thanks

Might want to consider buying all your parts from P.T. Schram, number in my signature section, he puts the best kits together from the UK, at the best prices. Also buy a soft spring t/stat from Lucky 8, for a cooler running engine, get away from Dexcool and make sure to use head bolt thread lubricant when installing new head bolts.

Tore down the engine today. Got to one side

Here are the pics. Let me know if you see anything odd in the #2 cylinder

You found your problem early on.
Make sure you use head bolt thread lubricant when installing the new head bolts and I would suggest a new soft spring t/stat from Lucky8 along with green coolant and a bottle of Water Wetter or Purple Ice.

Heads are at the shop and should have them back during the week. What do I need to do in order to prep the block for the head re-install? 1) Make sure the thread holes are clean 2) apply assembly lube to new head bolts 3) apply light coat of oil to cylinder walls. What else am I missing? What is the best way to prep the mating surface on the block? Thanks

Scrape block with a razor blade straight up and down so not to scratch it, then clean with brake clean and a towel (not a cheapo red rag). blow the bolt holes out with compressed air. Grease the bolts with heavy wheel bearing grease, get around the bottom of the heads good. Do the inline thermostat mod with a 180* stat and a 1/8 inch hole. Switch all your plastic coolant lines over to 5/16" fuel line. sand your throttle body heater plate flat and use "right stuff" to permanently glue it together.
