P0722 & P0734 - transmission rebuild / upgrade options
Hi
So I don’t have a full diagnosis but I took it to a local Land Rover repair shop and they said I have a mechanical failure with the transmission and maybe a bad torque converter. They recommended taking it to a transmission shop. I’m taking it to a recommendation from my local Land Rover club next week. It won’t move forward or backwards regardless of what gear it is in D, 1 , 2 , R...) Tons of others have had the same so I think it is safe to say the transmission is probably done for in some capacity.
03 Disco 2
135k
No CDL shifter
Toms Woods front shaft
OME lift
If the transmission is truly done, what upgrades can or should I have done while it is repaired? I looking for suggestions that would be good maintenance items to address, seals or replacement parts that would go along with the transmission rebuild. I’m hoping to repair it and make this Disco “bullet proof” when I eventually fix the liners.

The HP22/HP24 is a very robust and nearly bullet proof transmission. It's been used in a wide range of vehicles, and honestly the only thing that really kills them is fluid loss & lack of fluid/filter changes. Transmission shop shouldn't have any issues either finding another HP24 transmission or rebuilding yours.

Maybe your 2003 comes with a 4hp24(sticker on driver side of trans)..if so, that is the upgraded version of the trans. 4hp24's pop up on ebay often, and parts lots...usually about 350 w/shipping... these trans are found in many BMW's, jags, and other vehicles at turn of century....use common parts valve bodies, filters, etc. still readily available
'maybe' the trans shop will put in a used one if it's cheaper for you....or have it repaired.
besides the cool body design, this is the 2nd best part of these trucks, but it is also the most deeply buried and pain in butt job to do without a lift and trans jack...

HP22 = 4.0L D2/P38 HP24 = 4.6L D2/P38
I've changed out an LT230 TC several times with the D1/D2 on the ground. Transmission wise you can do it on the ground as well, but you'll need to raise the vehicle once it's on the transmission jack so you can roll it out from under it. Hardest part would be the top bell housing bolts.

My guy in NC is buried in transmissions. Before you pay to have one rebuilt consider a swap with a used one. I have two trucks with over 220k on them on the original transmissions.
BTW, no motion is typically the forward clutch, not hard or expensive to replace but either engine or trans has to come out. HP 24 does have an upgraded forward clutch. I could go in to the cause for failure but it is a bit technical.
