Default Parking Pawl Problems

Hey everyone, I believe the parking pawl on my 2003 DII is broken. The car rolls while in park and we’ve checked and adjusted the shifter cable. What are potential ways the parking pawl could be broken? Is it possible for it to break during an engine rebuild? Or can it only be broken while the car is in motion with the parking pawl engaged? Where is the parking pawl located? Thanks for your help.

There's not exactly a pawl, there's a large drum brake on the back of the transfer case. Couldn't be broken directly during an engine rebuild. It's mounted to the back side of the transfer case between the TC and rear driveshaft.

Normally, the parking pawl is inside the transmission, usually located on the output shaft. Though, I'm not a hundred percent sure of this trans, never had one a part. But, normally...it's inside the trans and motioned into play when shifter goes to park. It could be a couple different issues...but yes...normally they get broken when someone throws it into park while still moving. I'd surely make sure the linkage is moving the selector it's full range (all the way into park) on transmission.

There is a parking pawl, but you need to remove the TC to get to it.

Doesn't look like a bad deal, drop transfer and back housing and bing-go, bang-go...you're in.

But, check that linkage adjustment and movement...first.

I love the way they say...discard bolts on everything. They must have a surplus in England or something...lol.

Thanks guys. Brian, I had the same thought and that was the first thing I checked. To make doubly sure it wasn't an issue with the shifter cable we disconnected that and manually clicked the selector all the way into park, then rolled the car.

Alex, I wasn't familiar with the ins and outs of an engine rebuild and wanted to make sure the mechanic didn't have a reason to be in the transfer case where he could accidentally break the pawl.

Process of elimination makes it sound to me like the tow truck dragged the Rover with it in park. I watched them load it onto the truck the first time and it was in Neutral but because it was such a long tow they kept it overnight at their site. I guess they did the damage the following morning loading it back onto the truck. Sounds like a call to the towing company is in order...

It's VERY IMPORTANT when towing these rigs to put BOTH the Automatic Transmission in (N)eutral AND
the Transfer case in (N)eutral. Please educate the towing dip$hit$ for next time.

I'm dumb and everyone else is right. Ignore me. I've had a banging migraine all day so the brain function isn't exactly 100%

We've all misread a post before, it happens. I've typed out long, extensive responses...only to go back and find out I've answered a question that wasn't asked...lol.

Hope the head ache has subsided.

Brian.
