Default pinging/detonating

hi all,

i am after some help on a issue with my disco II ( 99mod)
since overheating i have the following symptoms:
-pinging/detonating under load..idles perfect, drives perfect under at low throttle.
- a smell of coolent. however can not spot any excess around the engine bay!
- heads are leaking a little, but always have.
- the o2 sesnor is covered in oil!! dont know if this is cousing it?
- there is a delayed start now by a 1 second from b4

so basically i am asking if this sounds like a internal water leak/head gasket or do you guys think other?

How much coolant do you add and how often?

thanks for your reply mate,
yes it is using coolent...apx 250ml per 50k i reckon
i have been using hi octane fuel for the last 50k's and it seems to have eliminated the prob?
a note also:
this pinging/detonating does not happen when the car is cold!

I'd start with a compression check.

Also could be a crank sensor which would also explain delayed start.

Better yet, do a compression test, since you are loosing coolant. My money is on a head gasket. How mechanical are you?

So you are using almost half a qt of coolant every 30 miles or so, that's cause for concern.
These trucks require high octane fuel all the time.
Time for new head gaskets.

thanks for the feedback.

compression test sound like a good idea, will get one done.
will get gaskets done also

i didn't mention that this problem only occurs when car has warmed up 15min or so! " no detonating when cold"
temp sensor

Temp sensor has nothing to do with it, it is either coolant in the cylinders or bad knock sensor(s).
