I would leave it, It helps keep sticks from flipping up into the belts and would help keep snow from packing up into the engine compartment.

i found on mine its a good place for ice and salt to collect, wroughting the radiator core support

Mine has a circular cap on it (not sure if they're all like that,) so for oil changes it's easy to remove the cap and change the filter.

Other than that, why chuck it if it's not causing problems? Keep it.
