Hello,
Can anyone help me please, I have just brought a 1992 V8 Land Rover Discovery (my first Rover buy). I was driving it for 2 days and it felt like the clutch cable snapped, so i took it to the garage and the clutch cylinder had to be repalced, not great after 2 days of getting it!
Then, later that day after leaving the garage, it stalled on me while i was at traffic lights. I managed to get it going again and got home, but i had to keep the revs up, as it was really wanting to stall again.
In the morning i turned it over and it started fine, great! But 2 minutes later it wasn't even turning over, so it is doing absolutely nothing now, just sitting there. The dash warning lights come on but nothing else happens.
Im think it might be the electrics in the car as i know they have a tendancy to go wrong in the older disco's, and it is 16 years old! OR it could be the battery?
I would love to sort the problem out myself and as a new Land Rover owner, i dont know if i am being stupid and missing something simple out?
Can anyone help me please?
Also, should i always be in the high diff gear when driving normal road conditions?
Thanks

Ok, so if it will not idle but runs fine otherwise then it is the stepper motor, also known as the idle control valve.
If you had to continualy restart te truck then the battery could have been run down. Charge the battery and see if it starts then.
Yes, the Hi-Low shifter should be in "Hi" range for normal driving.
"Lo" is for off-road and "Hi" Locked for sand and snow, "Lo" locked is for deep sand, deep snow, mud and steep slippery hills.
Nice looking truck. How many miles on it?

Thank you
I think the battery may be ok as the interior lights come on and i can turn the cars headlights on also.
So it may be the idle control valve then. Would that be a big job to do or is it a DIY job?
Its got over 200,000 Km on it so its done a fair bit!! 16 years old though.

200,000 Km's? Thats it? Wow, talk about low mileage.
Yes the stepper motor is a DIY job. Here is a pic of one so that you know where to look.
http://www.roverparts.com/Parts/ERR5199.cfmYou cannot order from here, I think they only sip to North America.
As far as not starting, it might be the neutral safety switch. It is a switch on your clutch pedal that keeps you from starting the engine while in gear.

I thought that was high mileage!!
Thanks for the pic.
It has been in neutral when i have tried to start it so it cant be the neutral safety switch can it? I know there is a fuel cut off switch under the steering wheel but i tried that and it made no difference!

Well if you have power to everything and the battery is fully charged but it will not turn over it has to be either the nuetral safety switch, the starter relay or the starter itself.
Check your fues also. I think that starter has a fuse to it as well.
