Plug wire fell off and fried coil?
I installed plugs and wires a month ago. Had a helluva time getting the NGKs to stay on the terminals. Apparently #2 cylinder wasn't secure because it fell off causing a constant misfire, fortunately only a few miles from home. When I reattached the wire (it was danging around behind the coil), I still have no spark. Do our coils fry themselves when there's a missing plug wire?
Well, I replaced the coils today and all is well. Also replaced the wires for a second time with Bosch 7mm with proper spring terminals on the coil side.
Lesson learned: don't buy cheap plug wires that use stamped bumps to hold on the coil plug. If they're slightly bent during installation, they may fall off and cause your coil to fry
In the first pic, left is OE style plug with spring clip (good) and right is the NGK 58404 that fell off, possibly damaged during install. You can see in the second pic how if it's bent a bit the gap will increase allowing it to fall off. This one was likely bent while installing the remaining wires and it went unchecked.

Hate to say it, but Bosch and nearly all 7 mm wires don't hold up well in a D2 that is why in most of the threads you will see people using an 8 mm silicone wire like STI's or Magnecor's, I have a 10 year old set that still test out well.
