Maybe it's just because I'm in a a really good mood because I finally got lift installed in the barn or maybe because I did plugs and wires on a DII in under 90min. (lift has nothing to do with this job) I don't know if there's a way to have someone add this a sticky, but this is some really good info I found, or maybe you all know this already. This is the 3rd time in my life I've done plug wires on a DII. Last time over 10 yrs ago. (obvious lapse in DII ownership) Maybe I've missed this info previously, but WOW was it helpful to have someone layout the installation order for putting it back together.
About 20 minutes into the job, I was defeated and the horrors of the job were coming back to me. I took a break and decided to look up the info again to make sure I wasn't missing anything. I found the normal forum discussions, etc, etc but then I came across a blog some guy wrote. I skimmed the stuff I knew about. Printed a diagram and committed to just pulling all the wire off vs doing one at a time. This job was SO easy compared to the way I've done in it before. I was done in under 90 minutes and I think I only cursed once or twice. And I'm not bleeding.
The big difference for me was previously I followed "other car" way of doing it habit.....meaning doing one plug/wire at a time so you don't risk getting the wires crossed. DON'T do it that way. Just take them all off. Print the diagram, think, and double check what you just did against the diagram as you go. FOLLOW THE ORDER THIS GUY SUGGESTS.
**I don't have SAI
Here's the short version:
1) unclip wiring harness from spring clip things (give just a bit more room)
2) remove ALL old wires
3) replace plugs
4) Follow info below for installing the wires. Quoted from linked blog:
Do one wire at a time and keep your mind on what you’re doing. This all makes more sense in practice than it does in print. If you install the new ignition wires in the following sequence, things tend to go easier (for reasons that will become apparent). 4, 3, 7, 2, 5, 6, 1, 8.
One last tip; make sure that wire #4 is pushed down below the socket for #3 as shown in the diagram before you place wire #3. It will be impossible to swing it down below #3 once its seated. The same thing for #5 below #6. They’ll be impossible to re-position once the other wires are in place (without removing something).
This was seriously easier than doing the same job on other vehicles. Before I found this guys blog, I would have said a DII wire R&R job was equal to or more of a PIA than other car I've worked on. It's all about taking them all off and putting them back on in this order. His example of how to hold it back there wasn't bad either.
I'm attaching a better diagram I found and a link to his blog.
If you laid this on the engine.... Cyl #1 is to your front/Right just like the photo. If you were viewing the coil blocks face to face, this would be right, remember you're coming over the top....#1 on the coil block will be the top/right port as you reach back in there.
