So I've got the 1590 low charging. I changed neg. Terminal but I think my problem is on the positive. Can't tighten any more. Only replacement I see is atlantic british 2 white adapter which cost $100. That seems insane. What have you guys done for yours.

 

 

I see plenty of OEM Alternator/Starter + terminals at the junk yard for cheap. I've just never needed one. You can do like Abran suggest and just cut it back and install a new terminal.

 

Mine wouldnt tighten. I bent a penny with a pliers and stuck that in there. Lasted 5 years until I put a new battery in it. Ironically, the new battery post was larger than my last battery because I dont need the penny in there.

Think outside the box.

 

I put a shim on made from a fiber based wood carpentry shim. they are reallflexible and cab be folded up to what ever thickness you need. Been in there fro two years now.

 

Two ideas that worked for me at various times.

o Shim it with a toothpick.

o Use a pair of Vise Grips to squeeze the sides of the terminal, deforming it slightly. Squishing it, if you will.

Both methods have worked for me at various times. I've seen little sleeves sold that fit over the terminal post to shim it. Seems like overkill to me.

 

Open the terminal clamp fully with a screwdriver or cold chisel, tap it right down gently onto the positive terminal using a suitably sized socket and then tighten the nut up, it's never failed me yet. If this doesn't work there are various terminal cap shims available on Ebay very cheaply. If needs be get some 0.005" engineers shim steel and form into a radius packing for the terminal post. Don't do a 'bodge' as this terminal draws a lot of amps power when starting.

 

When I do my big 5 cable swap, I'm adding military spec battery connectors for better clamping force.

 

Ahhh, but are those metric nuts and bolts

 

9/16" x 1/2" spanner does the trick
