Potential downsides of "the best PCV mod" on a Discovery 2?
I can't remove the black baffle and gave up trying. Half broke off. Sprayed it with Brake cleaner. Put in a screw. Big pliers. Pulled Full force. Won't budge. Gave up trying. Don't want it falling inside.
I figure as long as I spray it to keep it breathing it will do what it's supposed to do.
Wanted to complete this Mod but couldn't.

Can't pull it out and If I push it in I have to take off the valve cover...
The stainless steel sleeve that the baffle is in is what you take out of the VC. Then you are free to do whatever to get the baffle out without anything falling into the head. You need to pull it anyway since you want to open up the hole in the downhill side of the sleeve.
The tube won't push into the valve cover. There are baffle plates inside that will stop it going down.
Use a pipe wrench or slip-jaw pliers to twist the stainless tube free and it should pull right out.

According to Best4x4, the fitting is removable only on '03 and '04 Discoveries with the 4.6L engine. It's not removable on pre-facelift, '99-'02 trucks.

PCV valve serves two purpose. It did prevent crankcase explosions due to backfires, not as much a problem with modern fuel injection but still non-zero. The baffle will do the same thing. It also acts as a restrictor, just like the baffle does. There are two crankcase vents, one upstream of the throttle and one downstream. The upstream one only sees lower vacuum conditions, so it does not need to be baffled. The one downstream of the throttle sees very high vacuum would pull too much oil in to the intake if not restricted (common problem on the 5.3 LS truck engines - the removed the PCV valve also) so LR uses a baffle but the problem with the baffle is it plugs over time whereas the pcv does not. It would not be a good idea to just plug a baffle-less hose on the fitting in the intake.
Interesting. I could swear Best4x4 said otherwise. Oh well. A friend is trying to do the PCV mod on his pre-facelift truck and has had trouble removing the oil separator. We'll give this a try and see what happens.
