Default Prepping for a 18 day/ 8000km (5000+) trip Vancouver to Tuktoyaktuk

Now that you have stopped laughing .

What I am looking at are some suggested spares and pre-trip checks, I have until August to get things sorted.

My Disco runs well and is generally pretty happy, but it is a long haul with a ton of hi-way driving and I am a tad OCD about vehicle maint and getting home.

So for for spares :
  • Hoses - on order
  • Bosch CPS - on order
  • Serpentine belt
  • Thermostat 190 but it is just spare
  • Air Filter
  • Alternator ( because I have one)
  • Set of relays I pulled from a wreck - all tested
Is a spare MAF worth getting or could get along with a maringal one, for a day or so if I get a failure.

Pre-trip work
  • shock and springs -sitting in the garage
  • Install oil pressure gauge - on my desk
  • Check and top up transfer case and diff if required
  • Mechanical once over - I may pay for this a LR shop that know's Disco for my wife's peace of mind.
  • Oil change just prior - grease the drive shaft as well.
Any suggestions or thoughts would be helpful.

Tire Plug kit and air compressor - you can get a well reviewed 12v compressor from Amazon for $30ish
Basic tools - socket set - wrench set - pliers - screwdrivers etc - I want a tool roll bag for this stuff as it'll take up less space than a box.
I dont have 3rd row, so tools etc can fit in the rear storage areas.

Charging cables - usb etc
Batteries? For flashlights etc if necessary.
Jumper cables
Nitrele Gloves / mechanics gloves
Rags
Fuses

NewToTheTwo, tools I have covered I may have to buy a second spare. The last 700k is apparently hard on tires but i do have E rated LT tires so I am pretty safe.

I carry a jump pack, but jumper cables are not a bad idea.

Thanks for the suggestions

The tool or part you most will need is the one you won’t have
I don’t recommend doing anywork prior to a long trip. You know something is gonna happen.

Extra fuel.
Three days worth of food in reserves. So, if you shop every five days, have eight days worth.
Plenty of water.
Some recovery gear.
Plenty of space on your plastic (credit card).

Jealous, to say the least. Have a great trip!

Brian.

Hey Andrew, looking into an extra tire myself, pretty much have everything else sorted had not thought about the brake light switch that is a good add.

Brian, it took a lot of thinking, ok 10 minutes then 2 days thinking about my Disco, helps the wife said just do it.

Now work just has to approve my time off, but I am going with the happy plan and all will work out considering I am requesting the time 4 months in advance.

Sounds like a cool adventure!

I'm good with that sort of road trip engine-wise because I'm unlikely to blow my metal head gaskets with ARP studs, but I would think about a spare Rotoflex, CPS, brake sensor, fuel tank, fuel pump, serp belt, hose repair kit, tire repair kit, jump box+compressor, external solar charger, fuses/relays, hose clamps, vice grips (plural), ECU/BCU+Nanocom, and a tiny $70 folding bicycle.

UHF/Ham radio for those distances.

Underhood fireball automatic fire extinguisher for the engine bay:

Basic survival camping gear+food+water plus road flares and a handheld aerial flare (just in case). Tow strap. Starter fluid. Bars Leaks radiator plug. Power steering stop leak.

I'd add some TurboMaxx to my oil and differentials and transfer case (not transmission). Duct Tape and WD40. Spare tie rods??
