Default problems coming out of Park

2000 Discovery II. Starting yesterday, My car starting having trouble coming out of park. You have to play with the shifter and the ignition to get it to release and engage in other gears. I noticed the 2 red lights on each gear on the shifter only lights up beside (P) when I can release the shifter into other gears. I hear the ticking sound by the driver door when I hit the brake. Is this the brake switch problem or something more serious?

Next time it happens have someone check the brake lights, if they are not working replace the stop light switch.
10 min DIY and about $50 at your local autoparts store.

yeah the brake lights are working. Could it be something major like the linkage in the transmission. I don't get it though. It has been going in and out of park smoothly and fine and then out of nowhere it happens. I've been using my emergency brake and neutral as a substitute for park because i'm scared of one day it not coming out of park and I gotta pay to have it towed and another few grand the tear the transmission apart and all over one little gear.
