Default Problems Starting = Fuel Pump?

Hey Guys,

I'm having problems with my 2004 LR Discovery SE (almost 90K miles), which are pointing me to a fuel pump that needs replacing. Just looking for some other thoughts. Here's the situation:

When I turn the key, I get plenty of firing going on, but no ignition. So I leave the key turned to "on" for five seconds, and try starting it again. This time, it gets very close to igniting, but just can't seem to catch. I'll leave the key turned on for another five or ten seconds, and it usually starts after some hesitation on this third try.

Once it's on, there are no stalling issues whatsoever. I've driven 30-60 minutes at a time with no problems. However, once I turn it off, and go to start it again (no matter how long it sits), I go through the 1, 2, 3 key turn process to get it running.

I have engine codes - 1171, 1174, 0174, 0171, and 1168. The first four sound like they're all engine running lean. Not sure about that last one; hopefully an effect of the others?

So that's it - what do you think? Is this a fuel pump that needs to be replaced, or would you try something else first?

Thanks in advance for your help, I love reading this forum.

The valve that holds fuel pressure in the fuel rail is bleeding off fuel back into the tank leaving you with no fuel to start on. You might also have a cracked fuel hose inside the tank allowing the fuel to bleed down. Only way to tell is to remove the pump housing from the tank and check it, you may get away with just a replacement pump for $80 for have to buy the entire pump assembly for the mid $300 range.

Bob I have yet to mess with the fuel system yet, if I had, I would swing by and help ya diagnose.

I know you can get to the fuel pump and housing pretty easily. Remove the rear seats and pull the carpet etc.

That was one good thing Land Rover did right. Click and download the Rave manual via Mike's link. It will show you exactly how to get to it.

What about the crankshaft position sensor Mike? If his fuel pump was bad, he would not be able to even drive the truck?

I know a schrader valve is available once you remove the upper plenum on the back drivers side of the fuel rail. You could hook up a pressure gauge at this point. I was thinking about adding a fuel pressure gauge when I last had my plenum off but I didn't have time to fart around with finding the correct connector to make this happen.

An easy test for the checking the CPS (this tip helped me diagnose this not too long ago) is pull a plug and have a friend turn it over while you watch the plug for a spark. If there is no spark it is a pretty good chance it is the CPS. Mine crapped out at 87,792 ... I know exactly when from my maintenance log ... you are in the range where this tends to become a problem.
