Default Question about tire aspect ratio

Read a couple of the new threads about tires. I'm getting ready to put a new set on my 2004 Discovery. I've got 115K miles and this will be my third set of tires. I'm probably going to buy General Grabber AT2, as the comments on the board seem to be generally positive and they are cheaper than Michelins I've been using.

My question is about the aspect ratio. I've got 255/55/R18. I read an earlier thread that you can go up to an aspect ratio of 60 with no problem on the 18" wheels and that the benefit is smoother ride. For those that have made the switch in aspect, was the difference in ride really noticeable? I've got a great (essentially new) spare (Michelin 255/55/R18). I imagine that an added cost of making the switch is that I would be looking at buying 5 new tires instead of 4! Is any difference in ride worth the extra $200..?

If you are going off road also, yes, there is a difference.

Thanks, Mike. My offroad activity is mainly over the grassy hills we have here in Northern California. I've got a nice piece of property (20 acres) that we're planning on building on. Currently no roads and no bridge over the creek between the county road and the property. My Discovery is the only vehicle access we have for now --- and I admit it won't be as much fun whenever we do get the bridge or the roads!
