Default Question about tire size

New to the forum, just got a beautiful '02 Disco 2.

Before you jump on me about posting this, I am well aware there are numerous threads pertaining to tire size. However, I still haven't quite found a decisive answer yet. There seem to be a lot of opinions, many of which contradict each other.

My vehicle has the 18" rims and runs 255/55/18, which have an outer diameter of 29.043". They're definitely not optimal for off roading.

Is it possible to simply replace these with a set of 255/65/18, which would make the outer diameter 31.051"?

Some members say that 29" is the absolute largest tire size you can go without rubbing, others say 31". Does anyone have a decisive answer on this, or with the specific tire sizes above?

I recognize the need to lift the vehicle eventually, but I am doing a lot of highway driving to get out of town, and then some mild offroading, primarily in deep sand, and could use slightly larger tires with better claws without going taller yet.

The second question, which I'm sure is covered in another thread, is if these 255/65/18 tires will fit the stock vehicle, which tires are recommended for a healthy balance of highway use and off-road / deep sand?

Thanks in advance!

Hi,

I found this web page had the most comprehensive answer to this question:

Clifton Scientific Text Services, the Netherlands

Hope this helps.

I agree. We might want to cut-n-past the content into a post or sticky since websites disappear (like the Virgin Islands discoweb site seems to have gone away), but that is legally questionable.

In short, yes they will fit. I'm currently running 30s and there is definitely room for another inch at full flex and full lock.

I run 255/60-18's which are about 30" tall. Probably have enough room with 31's on stock suspension. One thing to be aware is, how much more sluggish your acceleration is with taller tires. If you pull a trailer, you probably won't like the results unless you re-gear.
