Default Quick oil question

My truck has been running rich for the past month. I finally got some money to buy a new MAF sensor and I believe this will solve my problem. When I went to check the oil it had a weird smell to it. I almost smelled like gas in the oil. The oil isn't very dirty and only has 3000 miles on it after my headgaskets were done. The oil is synthetic but with the smell I figure I might as well change it. I was also thinking about doing a injection cleaning but I don't know if it will foul the plugs. I have bosch plat +4 that were installed with magnecore when the headgaskets were done. So would the oil smell be from the engine being ripped apart or due to the truck running rich? Also should I do an induction cleaning since it has been running rich? Thank you all for your help

You will get gas in oil with many engines and your truck has been running rich so that will make it worse. Driving long distances can help to evaporate the gas out of the oil so if your truck is used for only short trips then there will be more fuel oil dilution. I would change your oil and suggest Rotella 5W-40 syn and a Napa Gold 1515 filter. Put a bottle of techron in the tank and do a seafoam induction cleaning.

If you haven't ordered your MAF yet, don't. Do you have a fault code or are you just concerned about the gas smell of your oil, which by the way, is very normal with any engine.
How often do you plan on changing your oil and what filter are you using?

I have already installed my Maf along with new filter. I had the maf codes about 1 year ago along with a k@N air filter. I tried cleaning it and it got me an extra year. I had the codes 1172 and 1175 that others have corrected by swaping their maf. The check engine light has been off since the swap. I am currently using mobile 1 10-40 high mileage with the mobile 1 301 filter. I plan on changing the oil about every 4500 miles on the odometer as it is off a little due to the tires. The oil has about 3000 miles on it along with plugs and wires. So would doing an induction cleaning be good before I change the oil.

Yes do it before the oil change. I've switched back to a Napa Gold (1515) filter from the Mobil 1 301 filter. From what I've read it seems to be a comparable if not better filter than the mobil 1 filter (people complain the mobil 1 and K&N filter drainback valves do not work well) for less than half the price ($6). It's made by WIX. The mobil 1 10W40 EM is good oil but the Rotella has higher levels of ZDDP whic is good for our engines. Just a thought though I like the mobil 1 too and have used it in the past.

You need to do some on-line research and study up on some of the oil filter comparisons before you make such statements. Also 5 years on the forums, I have never seen anyone state and verify that a K&N or a Mobil 1 oil fill will cause dry starts. You need to be real careful about what you tell people.

There are not many real oil filter comparisons besides the "dissect the filter and draw conclusions" comparisons. I had hard starts every morning with a mobil 1 301. Just switched back to Wix and they went away. So that is my personal experience. Go over and read on bobistheoilguy.com they have a specific oil filter forum where it is mentioned all the time. I don't make this stuff up just passing along info. Everyone should do their own research though. I like mobil 1 filters but from what I have read and from my experiences I decided to switch back to Wix. Also note I changed oil weights too but I was experiencing this back with 10W-40 oil and M1 filters too.

thanks for the heads up. i just searched around the web and there are some SERIOUS fans of this oil. supposedly, Wal-Mart carries 1-gallon jugs for about $19. For the price, this might be my oil of choice.

during the search, i found that some people are stocking up on this stuff because soon it will be "CJ spec". What is CJ spec, and what's so damn bad about it?

Another point to clear up for you, even a Fram will not cause hard starts, worst case your engine will start as normal but rattle like hell till it gets pressure.

That is what I mean by hard start, engine starts up as normal but it kind of lurches (not really the word I am looking for) for maybe 3-5 seconds then does the normal high idle until the idle solenoid kicks down the engine. Since I switched to Rotella 5W-40 and the Wix filter it stopped the initial 3 seconds of "fits". It started when I switched to the mobil 1 15W-50 and 301 combination but it was also after my head gasket job so I was not sure the cause.

I will add it does not happen on the Toyota Rav4 or Corolla with the 103 mobil 1 filter. The one time I used a Fram (with a flush oil after the head gasket job also) it did the same thing.
