Quick oil question
#21
At my AutoZone the Mobil 1 filter is $12 and the K&N is $15.
I have no problems with people spending their money however they want, but not everybody has the $15 to spend on a oil filter.
If a person always bought the "best" (insert overpriced) parts for their Disco they will go broke.
I agree to dis agree, you can recommend the K&N and I will recommend the Wix.
I know how to "Disco on a budget", I have spent less than $1,000 in repairs in 2.5 years on my truck so I must be doing something right.

I need to add this, his test saying that a oil filter may clog is a extreme case, 99% of us do not fall under that possibility.
Any oil filter can get clogged, that is why all engines have a by-pass valve built into them to allow for the oil to still circulate through the engine if the filter does get clogged.

BTW,
I didn't read the article yet, but there have been many posts on the Corvette forums and articles in classic car magazines about zinc in oils ..and additives. Turns out that typically oil companies typically (tradationally) have use higer levels of zinc than was necessary ..and even at reduced levels (I think in the 650-700 arera) no excessive wear (under normal circumstances ..the key word here), has been noted. Its when a guy adds a new high lift cam and heavy duty springs that the higher levels of zinc are needed. They basically indicate that the claims from reduction of zinc are urban internet legand not based on the facts. The tests were done by oil and car company labs.
Second thing: On tests that were conducted, zinc aftermarket additives, they did raise the zinc levels but only a very small amount. The amounts that were measured in tests were not enought to add significant wear reduction properties.
Third thing: Yeah, I use Rotella 5-40 in my VW Jetta Diesel. Works great. I run it for about 7,500 mi ...a lot of VW owners go 10k as a recommended interval. There are a lot of knowledgable Jetta guys ..and tuners.

Just trying to add some humor to the discussion.

I used to work with a woman who bought a Accord brand new and at 50,000 miles had yet to change the oil, when the oil light came on she would add oil to keep it full, other than that she only put gas in it.
A guy I used to work with had a Plymouth Horizon, he changed the oil filter once, then never again because it was to hard to reach, 100,000 miles later the car still ran great.
I do not recommend either of these car care methods.
