Default R380 Manual Trans Fluid

The time has come to change the Manual trans oil in my Disco.

I'm just not sure how much to buy....

Will 3 quarts be enough?

I'm planning on using Redline MTL as I hear it can help clear up my funky 2nd gear synchro issue.

2.8 qts, but I'd get a couple extra to allow for spills and/or not being able to get it all in from whatever you're using.
And yes, MTL is definitely what you want to use. There was a TSB sent to everywhere but the US to not use ATF in them.

Thanks!

Found it online for $9.99/qt on amazon so I ordered 4qts and got free shipping.

Cool R380 Gear Oil

I was interested to read your use of MTF in your R380, can anyone tell me why Land Rover recommend ATF Dextron II or III in the R380 when fitted to the 1996 Defender 300 Tdi, but they recommend SMX-S (which is an MTF) in the Discovery II fitted with the SAME gearbox but fitted to the Td5 engine ????

Surely AFT is much thinner viscosity than the SMX-S which I think is a W75 - 80 ????????????

Should I be using SMX-S in the Defender as well to make the box a bit quieter ?????

A fluid change will most likely not help your warn out synchros. I would suggest you quit using the tranny for braking, brakes are a lot cheaper to replace then synchros.

ATF was the recommended fluid for the early R380's. A TSB was published saying to switch to MTF.

There's no harm to a gearbox in downshifting when done right.
