I'm between a couple right now, but this one seems to do everything I want for $170 with the free installation gear, etc.

This one was a contender as well. I would really prefer a rear USB input for the iPod so I could just run the wire from the back and mount it somewhere near the dash with no wires showing, but hard to find everything I want all together.

I too have been tossing around the idea of tooling around with replacing the head unit, and doing some minor audio upgrades, though I know jack s**t about audio stuff. I did stumble across this link, and have been tossing around attempting this myself:

Double Din Dash Rebuild, Land Rover Discovery - DIYMA.com

In short, you lose the inconvienent cup-holders under the AC/Heat Control unit, move the AC/Heat unit down a notch, and you have room for a double-din. I think he also lists an aftermarket wiring harness that works for the Disco. Might be more trouble than you are looking for, but it's an option. -Mac

Why the heck would you want to go from a single DIN to a double???? That is WAY more work that it is worth! The only reason would be to get a bigger screen for NAV or something like that I suppose, but that at point just get a single DIN with a flip up screen. The install of the regular one should be simple and easy. Take the stock unit out, use the right wiring harness, and plug her in.

By the way... pulled the trigger on this one today. I should have it mid week and will see how it is for the install. I really think it will be fairly easy. For the money, this one has everything I wanted in a stereo:
Good power
Bluetooth phone w/mic and adapter
Dual USB to wire the iPod without having to use the front
Front USB/Aux
Seperate Sub adjustments
Nice/easy remote
Bluetooth streaming so I could use Pandora, etc from my phone
Infinite color matching possibilities to match the dash lights (don't really care that much about this though).
Downsides (from what I could see) the display is a bit hard to read... but has to be better than the stock unit anyway.
Will see how it goes...

Snafu, I am very interested to hear how you like that stereo. It seems to have all of the features that I am looking for also. I am interested to hear how the speaker for the phone works for you. Please keep us posted...

Default So, there is hope?

Not particularly impressed with the radio or the 12 speakers and want to update to something with satellite, iPod compatibility, etc. Looked at Crutchfield stuff - will these systems cut it?

Just installed tonight. Take a look at my thread about it. I'm totally impressed. Also, the sound is MUCH better now. I think I will do a new sub and leave the other speakers as finding the right sizes might be tough.

Snafu,

A couple questions if you dont mind:
was there a number on the wiring adaptor? JVC to Alpine (i assume)
was it plug & play or did you have to solder the wires?
you say that you can change the color of the display, which is nice.
can you change the size of the type on the display?
also the remote, did you just install that over the stock steering wheel controls?
I see the unit is satilite ready so that puts it in the top 10 right off.
the stereo sounds fine? i've heard other complain A/M stereos sounded muted. Im not a big audio nut, but i do know what bad sound like.
And I miss Howard.
