Is the Range Rover 4.6 (P38) different than the Disco 4.6?

Perhaps when mine takes a dump.

I did however just pull the trigger on an ex-mod 90, so maybe I'll just sell the disco before the engine craps out.

For me, yeah. I'm sure I'll have buyers remorse in a few days... but it will probably go away when it shows up on the hauler. And then come back again a few days after that.

It's LHD, so hopefully I didn't get ripped off too much, for what it cost.

Jealous...super jealous. The only reason why I got a DII is because I couldn't afford a 90/D90 at the time and wanted a Rover.

Default Engine swaps

Hi all. So Is the RR power plant not compatible or does it require more effort?!
I have located one real cheap!! I mean almost given to me. I may get it for resale just because it is such a great deal.

DII's from their introduction here in the US mid year '99 through 2002 were equipped with Bosch 4.0L engines. The '03/'04 models had the Bosch 4.6L engine.

DI's were first equipped with the Lucas 14CUX EFI system and the 3.9L engine. This changed in 1996 when the GEMS Generic Engine Management System was introduced. GEMS underwent a small change in the evaporative emissions system mid year 1997. That system was used until supplies ran out for the DI mid year 1999.

P38a's were introduced in model year 1995 and were initially equipped with the 4.0L GEMS engine. The front cover, oil pan and oil cooler lines differed from the DI GEMS engine. In 1996 the 4.6L was first offered in the P38a. It was GEMS as well. The GEMS engine was continued through 1998. Changes occurred to the GEMS engine in 1997 when the cam sensor was changed to the one used in later Bosch motors. Otherwise, all the sensors in the GEMS P38a were interchangeable with the GEMS DI.

In 1999 all P38a's were equipped with the Bosch 4.0L and 4.6L. The sensors were all different than those found in the GEMS engines as were the injectors and fuel rail. Most obvious were the changes in the upper and lower plenum. ECU's were different and Secondary Air Injection was installed on some engines.

If it is the GEMS, same same.
Bosch, same same.
Just drop it in and go.
GEMS P38a's have a different front cover to facilitate different oil cooler lines. GEMS P38a's use different cam sensors for '97 and '98. The oil pans are different as well. None of this is a deal breaker but the engines aren't identical.

The truck will not know the difference.
HOWEVER, you will not notice the 4.6 power unless you also use the 4.6 ECU or have yours reprogrammed.
The RR ECU will NOT work in a Disco, the DII ECU can be reprogrammed by the stealer, I do not know about the GEMS ECU as the DI never came with the 4.6 but the DII did.
BUT you do NOT have to reprogram the ECU, you can drop it in and go, you just will not notice any more power.
So if you are just looking for a cheaper used engine and P-38's in rough shape are cheaper than a DII used engine...no reason not to buy it. And then scrap the rest.
I want the analog clock though if it works.

Some Bosch engines came with Secondary Air Injection, some did not. This difference then extends to the EFI ECU and it's relationship with it's BCU. One has to be careful, all Bosch engines are not the same.
