Default Rattle when accelorating

Hello,

I recently purchased a 2002 Disco 2 with 191,000 miles for a $1000. It runs pretty good considering the mileage. Recently I have noticed a rattle like sound when accelerating and also when stopped and in drive. The rattle stops when I am cruising at speed and when in park. It also doesn't happen for the first couple of minutes when the engine is warming up.

Does anyone have any ideas of what this might be?

when the engine and exhaust are cold, crawl under the truck and check exhaust heat shields around the mufflers and the cats.

take a rubber mallet and hit the cats when hot and cold. Had a terrible rattle. turned out to be the cats, but sounded like the drivetrain.....

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll check out the cats and heat shield today and let you know how it goes.

So I gave my cats a good look and I'm still not sure if that is the problem. A little more info on the rattle... It starts after the vehicle is warmed up. It only happens when accelerating or stopped. If the car is running and in park the rattle stops. If the car is in neutral the rattle stops. But as soon as I shift into drive the rattles starts back up. Does that still sound like something the cats could cause?

Sounds a lot like your first post.
get someone to put truck in drive at idol (use chalk block) & have a look yourself once warm.

could be transfer case or driveshafts, rattling a bit when in gear.... have you greased your driveshafts lately...or put a heavier weight oil into transfer case?

Hopefully not the trans.....

Yes, you could have this sound from cats when in drive because the engine load changes a bit and therefore engine vibrations change a bit too... do the mallet test.
