Real world pricing?
Hi all,
I have decided to sell my Disco II as my wife would like a smaller car and because she let me buy a motorcycle last year I am not going to complain! The problem is that trade-in value is pathetic and I would prefer to sell it via local ad, autotrader, or possibly ebay. I was hoping anyone who has sold through these avenues recently could share their experience as far as a fair price for a reasonably quick sale w/o just giving it away. Any help is appreciated, also many thanks to those who contribute regularly as I have quite a bit by "lurking" extrathanks to Disco Mike as his phone conversations have been great!
Here is what I have:
1999 Disco II, Rutland Red, 155,000 miles
- I am the second owner, it has never been in an accident (or in snow, and only off road a few times myself)
- clean carfax
- a ~4" square area on roof where clearcoat is peeled; rest of paint is very good, some minor scratches and dings
- I broke some of the plastic on the front bumper near the vehicle recovery hook when I had to pull out a friend's Jeep who was stuck in a shallow but steep ditch. The tow chain caught the plastic when the stupid Jeep came out at an angle. Anyhow, It was a camping trip and I riveted it back together while we were there and can't figure out a better way other than a new bumper.
- Mechanically in pretty good shape:
Replaced valve cover gasket and intake manifold gasket. Installed Magnecor 8mm wires and Bosch +4 plugs at same time.
Rebuilt driveshaft with greasable u-joints and a new center ball kit. Flex joint in good shape
Performed engine flush and seafoam on intake manifold @ 140k. Used Mobil1 Synthetic and Mobil1 or K&N filter since then.
Changed Tranny fluid and filter @ 140k. Also changed gear oil @ 145k.
Replaced heater core @ 148k. Flushed radiator at same time.
Flushed power steering fluid at 150k. Did brake fluid shortly after.
The three amigos showed up intermittently a few times but finally came on and stayed on about 6k miles ago. The brake pads are OK, but probably are not OEM. The ABS pulsates still so DM indicated that it was probably not a severe problem. Unfortunately there is no shop around here that can reset the code ... LR dealer is 100 miles away.
Tires have ~11k miles on them, nothing special just Cooper all seasons rotated every 5k miles ... lots of tread left
- Interior is in pretty good shape
Leather in very nice shape
Harmon Kardon audio
Transfer case shifter is worked ~ every month to prevent freeze up
Climate control, Homelink, PW/PL, etc. all work
Auto mirror seems stuck in anti-glare mode but never been a problem for me
headliner comes untucked from windshield area and has a slight sag on passenger side
minor wear on arm rests, floor mats, etc.
For a ten year old truck this thing is in great condition IMO, but I may be biased. However, I'd like to sell it sooner than later so I am soliciting your help in pricing. Please be fair ... if you want me to give it away, I'll give it to my church :-)
Thank you,
Mark

From what I see, KBB private party value is around $2950 in "good" condition (but you may have more options so that would up the price.) You could always try ebay. Just put a reserve on it. I've bought and sold 5 cars thru ebay and never had a problem. Or you could try craigslist.

Look up the private party resale for your truck on all three sites, then take the average of the three, minus $500 and that is what you can expect to sell your truck for.
What you need to consider is the current economic market, nobody has any money, no banks are giving out loans and anybody in the market for a used SUV sure as hell does not want one that requires premium gas.
Most people are paying cash for a used car because they do not know if they will even have a job next month, and the banks know this too.
If it is paid for sit on it. If you must sell it then stop driving it, the fewer miles the better.
A full tank of gas will help move it too. "Theres $70 of gas in the tank"

Autotrader.com is your best bet, give the same description you gave us and include the fact that you have done everything and more with mantainence (assuming you have). Also post it to the classified section on here (may do you no good, but i've seen some interest on there). With gas being lower right now, and it being the winter season (not sure where you're from...), SUV's are more attractive. I would say put it up for $4500 and go from there. Yes thats high from KBB standardsfor your specific vehicle, but some people will not check the KBB and think thats a great deal for a Land Rover. Good luck, hopefully you can get the most out of it!
Thanks for the honest replies ... I was afraid I would get anywhere from "I'll buy it for $500" to "our trucks are worth 3x what KBB says"
I will try what CamDisco recommended. Snowdude, I'm in Alabama ... it would be a hell of a drive, but I'll buy you a case of beer for the ride home
... I have seriously thought about offering to split the travel costs of someone coming in from out of town as I would have second thoughts about traveling to get a vehicle. A friend of mine "tells" me that alot of people travel to the south (not coastal) to buy 1/2 owner vehicles because of the lack of rust. Do y'all think that would be successful or just a gimmick?

That would be a gimmick. If they wantit bad enough they will travel to get it.
You can throw in the first full tank of gas.
Yes alot of us from the north do seek cars from the south, you guys do not get any snow thus no road salt to eat your under carrage.
Here in the north the frame and body rusts into oblivion long before the engine and transmission goes bad.
