Default Rear axle weights.. remove???

Ok, I have the truck up on stands working on the rear brakes and I see these large steel weights mounted to the nose of the diff. I'm assuming they are there to make a smoother "soccer mom" ride around town?? I'm really wanting to take a wrench to 'em and toss them in the scrap metal bin 'cause they look like they could catch on stuff off road and I'm all for shedding excess lbs. (rear seats already in the bin) Can I toss 'em??

Thanks all, Mike

They are there to cancel out driveline vibrations.

I don't think anyone has ever caught one of those weights on anything offroad. If you did, you would have torn a lot of other stuff up before hand
