Default Rear differential fluid... didn't like this...

Just finishing up the 60k service. Did the front differential, no problem other than I had to use a 4 foot breaker bar to take off the drain plug. Some metal shavings on the plug. (about 1/8") Came out black. Did the rear. Had to use breaker bar again. At first the fluid came out black, then white creamy crap Also had about 1/4" of metal shavings on the plug. I noticed the rear plug had what looks like teflon tape on the threads but the front plug didn't. I checked the breather hose on the top of the differential and it's connected and not broke anywhere. Not leaking anywhere. Just wondering where water might have got in at? Would this have happened if the PO did a lot of water crossings? No weird noises while driving, even at highway speeds so I don't think any damage is done. But would like to know how it could have got this way.

It has probably never been changed and the breather is clogged and the condensation could not escape.
Refill it with cheap stuff, drive for a couple of weeks and change it again.
Remove the breather and blow through it with your mouth and see if it is clogged.

Thanks Spike. I'll check that. I refilled with 85w140 and I'll change that again a few weeks as I'm sure the drain didn't get all the crap out.

Try some Redline Shockproof, heavy wt, and that will take care of the metal shavings on the magnet.
