Default Rear Hydraulic Step does not work

Hi,

The rear step has only one position now. It is always down. I tried searching the threads and didn't find anyone with this problem or I don't search very well. But I did come across someone saying something about a shock? Does anyone have any suggestions as to what part needs to be replaced. Thanks

AH the old sagging step problem.........yup there's a gas/hydraulic strut that is supposed to pull it back up , if the step moves freely enough, then you need a new strut. Atlantic British (roverparts.com) sells a kit....about $130. if I remember correctly. And , no, the DI parts are not the same as the D2 parts.....I tryed to repair my step with a D2 strut and had to rework the brackets and reposition the strut mounts...worked for a while and then broke down and bought the kit anyway.

You might also check the local salvage yards for a used one for $120 or so, also sites like Roverlandparts.com.

You might want to consider just removing the step and installing a ladder instead. It just get's in the way if you ever do any off-roading. The ladder is more useful since you can use it as an effective grabrail even if you aren't climbing up on the roof. This ladder can be had for under a hundred bucks. Unless you weigh 300lbs, it's plenty sturdy enough.
