You can use them on the later trucks. I only have the upper metal guards, and cut small lengths of aluminium tubing to act as spacers so I can't overtighten the screws and crack the lenses.
Yes, they are usable if you use spacers and longer screws. Mine actually came with those guards.
The guards stand off from the truck an inch or so, so there is a risk of the guard catching on brush or limbs.
