While out in the backcountry of the Inyo mountains I lost a rear wheel hub bearing. Got home took it apart and ordered a new assembly from ABW.
Hub assembly arrived still waiting on the castle nuts from Rover's North. As far as I could tell they were the only US retailer that had them in stock.
So I have two questions about reassembling the hub assembly.
1. I've attached a picture showing the axle housing where the hub assembly mates up. If you notice somebody used silicone, I presume to stop it from leaking gear oil? I'm not sure why they would have done that unless the housing is damaged? Or is it a preferred practice to lay a bead upon install? You'll notice on the new wheel hub bearing it has an o-ring perhaps the old wheel hub bearing when it was removed and replaced they didn't put an o-ring in there?
2. The previous owner cut all the ABS wires on all four corners. It goes without saying I have the three amigos. My understanding is that one thing that ABS sensors do is let you know that there's a problem at the hub. So for instance if a hub bearing is starting to go the ABS lights will come on. I know there is a hack out there for rewiring the ABS brake housing block. Would it be wise to replace all the ABS sensors. I already plan on checking all the wheel hubs on the remaining wheels. So maybe it's time just to do a remove & replace?
Front ABS sensors in the rear = no extensions needed as they are longer vs stock rear units. I recommend that on any lifted D2 that flexes off road. Option B is also something that all LR D2 owners should do as it helps greatly narrow down issues with the ABS/TC/HDC system.

Interesting, My understanding is that the hub assemblies are different front to rear. How can I get my hands on just the ABS front sensor and wire? Is that something that is typically sold separately?
Yeah my option b seems like the way to go I'm going to make sure all those wheel hub bearings are good to go. Yes it can be fixed out in the field but I think it's a pain in the butt. I'd much prefer to be prepared rather than reactionary.
Yes you can buy the ABS sensors separately from the hubs. Last set I bought was 15.00 a sensor. Zero issues and I won't ever have to worry about over extending them.

Coat the o-ring with a little vasoline on reassembly to prevent it from pinching. Clean off the axle matting surface as best you can so the bearing sits flush as possible.
