Default Rebuilding alternator for my D2

My Question:
Can anyone recommend or point me to where I can get replacement parts for alternators (diodes, bearings, bushes, etc, etc)?

Background Info:

...It seems to me that many alternator failures are a result of simple straight forward internal component failure that could be fairly simple to fix/repair/replace and a lot cheaper than spending $260 - $300 plus for a "new" rebuilt/reman alternator.

I think many of us replace, or pay other people to repair, things because we just don't have the time to figure it out and do it ourselves. Or maybe we don't have a spare vehicle to drive and/or our situation doesn't allow us to go without a drivable vehicle etc etc. Or maybe one man sees a mountain while another sees a hill etc etc.

So... since I'm fortunate enough to have another drivable vehicle and the time (and the Internet makes everyone "experts in their own minds"), I'm going to tinker with and try to rebuild my old alternator for my D2.

Thanks very much
and
Cheers,

Thomas

find a rebuilder in your town. most of the time its the bearings that fail and make lots noise. otherwise most issues are battery related or something else.

is it actually charging at 14.2 volts?

I talked to a local starter/alternator shop owner last year about this very topic. His reaction was very positive. It seems that the bearings are the weak link and very tedious as the fit is very precise. I am lucky to have someone with so much knowledge (30+ years exp.) close by. He said it is not all that common for the diode packs to go out on these.

Thanks for responding Rovin4life and d2luvr....

No it wasn't charging at 14.2 volts. My old alternator was charging (or not charging) at 11.52 volts...

So far, I haven't had any luck finding a local alternator rebuilder. I'm not a professional mechanic etc and the few local professionals I've asked so far couldn't recommend anyone who's still in business. I'm still looking though.

It seems that local alternator rebuilders are not as common as they once were. (Ergo my post).

If anyone comes across any useful sources for rebuilding alternators etc, please pass them along...

cheers,

Thomas

I had mine rebuilt and installed for $120.00. That doesn't help you, but it happened.

Thanks for the replies and suggestions...

I live near Seattle, WA. (yes my location probably would be helpful)

I'll google "alternator rebuild kits"... (I hadn't thought to try that search... again ergo my post

If anyone else has any other suggestions, insights, or have had any experiences with rebuilding alternators (or having them rebuilt), etc etc... please feel free to throw in your 2 cents....

Thanks much and cheers,

Thomas

Very southern tip of South Texas, just a few miles from all of the exciting drug cartel action. Indiana is probably safer.
