i've been in the rebuild your engine situation 3 times......should have been once...but it was dragged out because of the cam bearings...the mechanic said they were in spec.....but they WERE NOT!!!!!

3 rebuilds later...he caught my truck on fire and totaled it....it happened because he got sloppy and was tired of working on my truck for free...

if your think you know everything and dont want to replace the cam bearings..fine....u cant say i didnt warn you!!!!

Long story... short version:
Crack in block and liners leaking coolant. Got a 2002 RR short block out of a roll over car. I stripped the block and cleaned everything and then had an indy LR guy look things over, measured and checked everything and okayed the block. He said not to change the cam bearings unless they are damaged, they are not damaged.
I'm an accountant so I do not know everything... but I did sleep in a Holiday Express once. My previous job was in the merchant navy in the engine room, I maintained the main and auxiliary engines and other equipment. I did attend college in machine shop, 3 phase electrical and other fun stuff, I can run lathes and milling machines, weld and I do own a micrometer and know how to use it. In 1986 I rebuild a RRC V8, an old one with with carbs and a distributor.

I hate installing cam bearings. If the tool is at all beat up you'll pull them in out of square and then you have to start over again with a new set. I would reuse them but use some moly-graphite assembly lube on the journals when putting it back in. Are you installing a stock cam and lifters?

Yes, a stock LR cam and lifters, so as well the other kit. I would rather know (or hope) it works than not be sure.

I have noticed that the 02 RR 4.6 uses different exhaust valves than the 03 D2 4.6. Something to note if you end up replacing any.

I'm just using the block, crank and pistons from the RR 4.6, the rest from my 2003 Disco. I was told it all fits, I hope so or I'm in for a surprise.

The only other thing I would add is in regard to this blog note from Robison Service:

http://robisonservice.blogspot.com/

In the article he talks about later V-8 engine failure behind the liners that may be related to the head bolts. I read the article this spring before repairing my exhaust valve, and ended up paying extra attention to how clean the head bolt holes were, and using just a bit of graphite moly on the threads when I tightened it up. He indicates the cracks may have formed by using stiffer head bolts. Anyhow - something to consider when you put it together.

Yeah I read that, but there's not much one can do about that in my opinion. If the block is prone to cracking then it is going to crack no matter what, it may have already cracked for all I know.

Its just a engine, rebuilt it and throw it in the truck and drive it until it blows, then rebuild it again.
Odds are a bulldozer is going to crush it in the grocery store parking lot before the rebuilt engine goes bad.
