Yes they can - I do it all the time with no problems. However, I ONLY use genuine Jubilee clips which are well worth the price you pay as they can last many decades without losing any performance.

As an update, I didn't do anything, and nothing happened.

The hose clamps are still sat on my bench. Any coolant loss I saw has not reappeared. I'm suspecting trapped air found its way out after refitting hoses and bleeding, dropping the level.

 

I suggest going to the constant torque clamps instead of the simple worm gear clamps. The latter is susceptible to loosening over time, especially when the vehicle is exposed to constant vibration in off-road conditions.

I work in the truck manufacturing industry. We recommend our off-road customers spec constant torque clamps for their hoses and piping.

Also, what about the fancy, expensive, t-bolt clamps used for intercooler piping?

wow...we are getting into some details here. and to think, I just make sure they are stainless...

 

Worm gear clamps also create and odd lump at worm gear which eventually breaks plastic piping by flexing it until it cracks. Spring clamps are best, they grab 100% round and do not loosen. Just a PITA to do sometimes.
