Refurbishing XYZ (transmission shift sensor) switch.
My Discovery has the flashing m+s lights and can't tell what gear it is in for certain gears. I got the rivets out of the XYZ swtich, it doesn't seem dirty or corroded inside, but I will try cleaning it with alcohol, MAF sensor cleaner, some fine sandpaper and then put dielectric grease on it. Will this work, or are there better methods? What is the best way to put it back together? I was thinking some small nuts and bolts, but i feel like they would come loose easily. I may rivot it if I can figure out how.
An accepted method for reassembling an XYZ switch is to use pan-head machine screws and nyloc nuts. I recall the screws and nuts are 4mm, but that's easy to confirm when you're in the hardware aisle at your local store. If you use nylocs it's very unlikely they will loosen.
Did you get the transmission fault codes read before deciding the refurb the XYZ switch? The RAVE lists 14 or 15 faults that can cause the flashing M&S lights, and a failed XYZ is only one of them. You may have read too that the most common cause of the M&S lights is low voltage. The transmission ECU is notoriously fickle about voltage. Check, clean, and double check the battery terminals and grounds.

I had a P0705 (transmission range input circuit malfunction) code, and the D light on the shifter would flash as well as not show if I was in gears 3,2,1. I cleaned out the XYZ switch, rivoted it back together, cleared the codes, and it worked!
