Default Relay help, WTF, and three amigos

I posted last week about a three amigos and red BRAKE light issue and was told to get the codes read. No luck reading the codes at my LAPS and I really don't want to give the dealer $100 to read the codes so I ordered a ScanGauge II. For $159, if it works twice, I'm ahead.

Well today I received my ScanGauge II and ran out to see what my codes might be but unfortunately, the unit didn't power on. In the troubleshooting manual, it said it was probably a fuse so I went to the only fuse box I knew of, the one in the engine bay, and ran into the WTF. It seems that somebody had mixed and matched half of the fuses and I'm missing a relay. There was a 40 in place of a 20, 10s and 30s mixed up. WTF? I realigned the fuses as best I could and found what might be my three amigos problem.

It turns out I'm missing the ABS relay, R10! I'm looking for the part number and if I can get it locally (not the dealer).

Also, just for grins, I swapped in the R4 relay and started the car and the three amigos were gone, although I didn't run it very long, all of the lights were out on the dash.

So along with the part number question, any ideas why the relay would be missing? Could someone have possibly thought that having the dash lit up was better than having the relay in there?

Thanks,
John

The only reason to pull the relay that I can think of is because of a shuttle valve problem and they didnt want to fix it so they removed power to it.

Your new scanner won't read ABS, SRS or SLS codes, takes a scanner with lots of software.

Well right now, it doesn't read anything!

I can't tell which relay I need.

Rover's North has this one at $44.13

Atlantic British has this one at $12.95

Are there any used DII's in your area for sale that you can pop the hood and take a look?

I pulled the ABS relay and looked on the side, mine is BMW 6136-6901-469 and also has V23136-16-x48 made by Siemens.

That appear to be a standard relay that can be bought at any Radio Shack for about $5.

Nobody had a relay in stock, so I went to Radio Shack (Thanks AK), and picked up a 30 amp relay. My three amigos are gone, along with their angry red friend (BRAKE), and I have ABS!

I'm afraid the resolution of this issue is not likely to help too many people as it was a missing relay, and I'm sure I will find out the reason the relay was removed, but for now, my dash board warning lights are wonderfully dark.

Thanks again,
John

Sometimes the universe lines up just right and everything else falls into place man... YOU are one lucky dude! You fixed your rover for FIVE BUCKS!! SPENT AT RADIO SHACK NO LESS!!! You didn't spend hours chasing gremlins that come and go, surfing on line for electronic parts that *might* fix your problem, and dealing techs that don't know any more than you do. Heart of a rover with the body of a toyota?

Thanks for sharing man, that story warms the heart to hear , and at the same time it makes you cry[:@]
