Removed heads. Is engine ok?
The junkyard said that I can return the engine but said it was in "solid condition" so they want it back fully assembled and wont give me just the heads. When I reassemble, what parts can I re-use? I assume they will test the engine for a few minutes before storage. I have some cheap head gaskets that I will replace, but what about the head bolts and other gaskets? Would the originals last through their testing/until failure from the crack?
I should have shared this earlier. If you run into return problems with anything bought with a credit card you can dispute the charge. The merchant is given a chance to dispute your dispute, but at least you have a bank in the middle listening to both sides, and it's my understanding that unless the customer's claim is demonstrably false the bank sides with the cardholder.

It isn't quite this clear cut in favor of the cardholder, but the gist of this is correct in my experience. If you do need to go that route, you tell them that you used your card for the purchase, the item they delivered is not as advertised - not in the usable condition they said it was, they are refusing a return/refund. Your problem will come up when they reply to your cc company; they will say that you violated this and that term of sale, they will say that they offered a return but required that you return it as received and what they received back wasn't up to the T&C.

No.
Period.
Bummer.
Under U.S. law, credit card users have relatively strong protections.
Debit card transactions are SOL.
That it is why it is important to use a credit card for your purchases, especially those that are larger dollar amounts or for which you can foresee there is some risk.
