Removing and Reconditioning Fuel Injectors with new O Rings
How do you remove and recondition the fuel injectors? Just pull them? Is reconditioning simply fitting new o rings? The injectors were twisting as I was removing the electrical connectors and I’ll spray those with contact cleaner. I had a misfire and I’ve read that sometimes it’s an o ring. I’ve found less expensive sets from Britpart and Elring, but I don’t know if they’re good. Hopefully they’d be better than the old ones though.
I’m really not sure, just that there was a misfire and I’m assuming they’re probably 20 years. Years ago a mechanic removed a spark plug and cranked the engine to check compression - it seemed the one cylinder was low and I can’t remember if that’s the one with the misfire as well. I believe it was on the driver’s side and thought it was cylinder 1, but the misfire was on 5 - I might not have noticed that it was cylinder 5 with low compression. I’m not sure where to go with this other than reinstalling everything and seeing what happens without replacing the head gaskets and putting new o rings on the fuel injectors. I could just do the valley pan and valve covers for now, only that I’d have to do it all again if it’s still acting up and I wanted to try to get it right.
Personally I wouldn't go farther if it was me, unless I had good reason to suspect an issue. The "while I'm at it" thinking can have you doing a complete overhaul when all you needed was a simple repair.
If you are pulling the injectors sending them out for service is an option. I used Mr. Injector (mrinjector.us). They clean and rebuild them and send back a report. They send new o-rings. There are other servicers mentioned in threads. I had tried everything in hunting down a P0171/P0174 and it ended up being bad injector seals. Recently this summer I had a misfire code. It ended up being a bad ignition wire. I changed out the plugs/wires and cleared up the issue. It would only trigger upon hitting a large bump/off road. Good luck on tracking it down
I know I’ll get further down and have to decide if I should also redo the heads - haven’t done any of this before so it’s a challenge. That injector service would be good. The fuel rail needs to be removed and you can just twist and pull them out? I’d wondered if the non-genuine o rings are ok to use since the genuine ones are $11 each and you need two for each injector. A whole set on eBay of elring rings is $35. I was also seeing P0305 (cyl 5 misfire), P1451 (evap?) and P0141 (o2 sensor?). They were all infrequent other than the cylinder 5 misfire code that would return before completing a drive cycle most of the time. I’ll have to see what I get when it’s running again, but I don’t like the thought of having to do a lot of this again if I don’t deal with those injectors/o rings now or possibly even the head gaskets…
I put new o-rings on mine a while back. Spray some silicone lube in the hole first and let it penetrate, then just yank. You can also replace the little metal mesh filters. There is about a thousand videos on youtube on how to rig a crab cleaner spray can to the injector and clean it out while pulisng the voltage.
FYI mine were 18 years old with 160k on them and were fine.
And really it's mostly a bad coil, spark plug or spark plug wire, or all of them.
Also check your connectors - I had to replace all of them b/c the insulation was cracked and some were literally hanging by a couple wire strands
In your many, many threads and posts here, you have asked about going ahead with replacing the headgaskets. Yet, I don't recall reading anything that clearly indicates there is a problem with the headgaskets.
"If it ain't broke, don't fix it."
It's not a foregone conclusion that every DII will require headgasket replacement. I met a fellow here recently who has a 2001 DII that's going strong with the original headgaskets. At 247,000 miles.
It's overheating that causes headgasket failure. Keep it from overheating and they should be fine. It's been a rite of passage for many, but it's not inevitable.
Pretty easy to pull the injectors out. Make sure to remove and save the steel clips that hold the inlet side of the injector to the fuel rail for all 8. I sent my injectors out for cleaning, which the before and after flow are in the thread I posted about it: https://landroverforums.com/forum/di...leaned-106320/
If you're just wanting to replace the o-rings, I also recommend replacing the micro-filter in the inlet of each injector since you're right there.
