Well.. I have a pretty raggedy 2000 disco 2 with 215,000 miles on its 4.0 Bosch. It’s been an odly reliable daily for a few years. One day however it ran very hot and I had no choice but to drive it hot because of an emergency. few days later I got super thick plumes of coolant smoke out of the exhaust. Naturally I replaced the head gaskets but also decided to rebuild the heads. Nearly finished putting everything back together and I’m still getting plumes in my small test runs. It’s now also severely leaking out of the water pump but I’m not sure how that gets coolant into my cylinders. if anyone has any thoughts on this I’d really appreciate it. I’m going through chemo and just want my landy to run again.

Can you elaborate how you’re “nearly” done putting back together and running it?

 

Depending how bad the head gaskets were blown, prior to rebuild...you could have a substantial amount of anti-freeze in the exhaust system...that will have to burn off over time. A couple twenty minute drives should clear things out. Granted, change water pump first, bleed system properly and check temps with scan tool as you go.

 

It is is going to blow white for at least 15 minutes if not more, as others have noted you will have coolant and other accumulated moisture in the exhaust. Run at idle for at least 15 to 20 minutes watch the temps like a hawk and put a bottle on the expansion tank overflow line.

The white should vanish after that if it does not you have a bigger issues left.
