Question RPM and performance problems

Hello,
I have a 97' Discovery that i am having issues with. Everytime i my put the car into park or neutral the RPMs shoot up to 2000. I took it to my mechanic and he was able to bring it down a little bit but not very much. Does anyone have any knowledge on this particular problem? Any help would be greatly appreciated! It also seems to not have the power that it had when i first purchased it. I have to really push the pedal down to get it to go anywhere. My mechanic also said this but he doesn't know what is causing it. Again any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
Justin

You have a vacuum leak and need a new mechanic if he didn't know this, or find out what else might be wrong.

Ditto,
I would find out what he tried to do, so when you find a better mechanic, you can tell him what that fool did to your truck.
Two other items to ckeck and clean will the the t/body and the IAC

Yup, time for a new mechanic, if he does not know the problems that a vacuum leak cause then he shouldnt be working on cars.
