Hey folks, I am replacing the timing chain cover because of the usual: low oil pressure and lots of scoring in the oil pump. I have the new cover and am trying to install the old camshaft position sensor in it. I have a new o-ring (ERR4815), but it looks like the sensor itself has a kind of rubbery sleeve on 25% of the sensor on the wire side. Photos are attached. That rubbery sleeve is intact around the bevel, but is worn through and ragged on the shaft of the sensor itself. If that thing is worn, do I need a whole new sensor? I've been trying to look at photos of parts online but I don't even see that sleeve in the photos of replacement sensors I've found.

Anybody know anything about it? If I reassemble with that worn sleeve am I going to leak oil? Or does the o-ring do the whole job?

I would either clean everything up and glob RTV on the o-ring then see how it works, then replace sensor if still leaks; or just replace the sensor if I wanted to make sure I wouldn't need to do it a second time. The o-ring alone could leak since the sensor diameter is too small without the covering. Looks like that sensor has rattled around in there for quite a while.

 

Alright, thanks for that. I'm just going to put a new one in. I don't want to go back in there again. It'd really **** me off if it worked for a while then started leaking right after I thought the coast was clear.

 

I’m struggling to fit the o-ring through the bevel - the sensor sticks out with the o ring in there, but it’s fine without it. Any suggestions for getting it to fit properly? The sensor is the original and the o ring is the same part you’ve got (new). I tried motor oil, silicone spray, hammer/punch… I’ll try twisting back and forth. It just seems there’s no way the sensor will sit properly with an o ring in there, at least not if the o ring isn’t pushed past the bevel, which it doesn’t want to do. I’ll try lubricating the metal on the front cover to help the o ring slip past the bevel.

 

Just clean it and install the new O-ring. If the mating surface on the sensor is not smooth, then fill it with RTV. There is no oil pressure on the other side. Not worth to buy a new sensor only because of some damage on the housing if that can be fixed easily. Cheapest genuine is $272.13. Avoid aftermarket, if you can.

 

The issue I’m having is with the o ring preventing the sensor from fitting in properly. I tried lubricating the o ring but I’ll try lubricating the metal and twisting the sensor in.

Looks like it fits fine. The o-ring just fills the bevel. The sensor just goes in.

 

It turns out the original seal was still on there - it’s a rigid plastic that fits the bevel. I looked at a picture of the sensor on AB and found it didn’t have that bevel, so I realized it was a seal that could be removed. I figured the o ring probably seals better, so I used that instead of the old seal and it fit properly. Thanks everyone
