Sad, sad story...
Not for nothing, but this sounds like a simple fender bender at relatively low speed, IN THEIR DRIVEWAY.
He's a young driver, who's obviously still learning, who made a mistake that he's definitely going to learn from given the astronomical cost of a bumper on one of these trucks.
You guys are riding him like he plowed into a church van full of nuns and orphans while he was sexting with a fifth of jack in his hand.
The reaction to this, It's just a little over the top, I'm just saying.

You learn from your mistakes, and from people riding the hell out of you.
Had he plowed into a van load of nun's and orphans while sexting and drinking would be totally understandable because that would just be stupid, we all have done stupid things.
Was your dad easy on you the first time you did something wrong?
Mine wasn't.
Maybe we are being to hard on him, maybe next time he is in the Costco parking lot and it is a little kid he backs into.

In his own driveway is no excuse for lack of safety.

And do you let your kids run around in large busy parking lots unattended? That sounds more like a parenting fail than anything.
Some people do, I dont.
Obviously everyone here is perfect has never had any kind of driving violation, nor has eaten while driving. Switched lanes without a blinker always walk fully around their vehicle before moving, obviously nobody has ever been 1mph Iver the speed limit nore have they ever blinked during driving.
What's more important than your bumper is teaching you to be a jerk dad, and the 500$ replacement isn't punishment enough, your son deserves a summer at penn state.

I don't think i was anywhere near that hard i just suggested riding around with your son for a day and teaching him how to be a better driver. i even stated that he will always be your baby and i understand "mom" that he is good boy but its always good to have a refresher course with a parent. I told you i was not trying to be a dick and was voicing my concern. I hope you don't disappear from the forum and that we or I can help you with something else later on down the road. I also did not know you lived out in the country when I mentioned a child but it was just a reference point. Safety is very important at all times.
