Default Safari Lights Relay

I have an 01 Disco II with factory Safari lights. They are working only once in a while now so when I had the vehicle in the LR dealer for servicing yesterday I had them check it out. They said they thought the relay was bad and they would need to buy the $220 wiring harness kit. Add another 2 or 3 hundred for labor and I end up with very expensive lights. Problem is that I used them and liked them!

Can I simply replace the relay without changing out all the wiring? That might be something I could tackle myself. And, can I even buy the relay separately?

Yes, there was a very nice write up about how to use the existing wiring and a differant switch to eliminate the expensive factory controller. Take a look -

Mine went too. I went and wired them to be on with the high beams. Couldn't quite figure out the switch part (I didn't want to mess with the whole cruise control switch thing). I grabbed a new relay and the wiring harness for it. $5 for it all. They now go on with the highs. I'd prefer to have them hooked to the factory switch, but just fine the way they are for now!

If I find a wiring kit (I think I saw one for $109) can't I just swap out the relay and not worry about the rest of the harness?

I used the guide listed above. It took about 30 minutes to do both sets. The only problem I have is the safari lights come on with the running lights. I have to remember to turn the head lights on when driving or I'm blinding everyone in the day time. That is just a simple wiring issue from when the lights were installed originally. But the instructions are real simple. My 12 year old daughter helped do the conversion.

I plan on running the hot leads back into the cabin and installing 2 toggle switches above the map light to give me control of when the lights are on or off so I have control of 2 or 4 lights on at a time. I'm not concerned about using the factory switches already installed. I thought it would look better with toggle switches with the red covers over them you have to flip before you throw the switch!

Yes, you could just use the controller from another wiring kit. Keep in mind, there were differant kits offered each year and the pins in the controller may not be in the same location. Not a big hurdle.
