Second that! I fought Disco Mike's advice on that one tooth and nail. Kept cleaning mine and cleaning. Worked good for a day then s***y idle under 2k rpm. The Bosch MAFs in the Disco degrade over time - period! -- and the K&N filter and cleaning accelerates that. A failing MAF will not throw a code. I boned three MAfs on three different Rovers until I woke up. DON'T use K&N filters and DON'T clean the MAF. If you suspect yours is faulty spend the bucks for a new one and you'll probably see your truck drive like new. I bought the MAF part only at Bimmerzone for $179 (ours is the same as found on a BMW 540). Others have said they found them cheaper. Get the BOSCH MAF only, the aftermarket MAFs are crap.

Regarding your ticking - could be the exhaust manifold (that's where mine was coming from). A failing PAS pump makes a whine that gets very loud when you turn lock to lock (I just replaced mine). The PAs pump does not tick.

Default I went for a second opinion on my noise

The mechanic thinks its my Alternator. He said its causing the tick and has a nasty growl. Again, what have I gotten myself into? These things are something else!

99 Disco 59800
Drive shaft rebuild, K&N filter, removed K&N filter, cup holders (I mean come on) Throttle body heater gasket upgrade, Surp belt (took auto parts store 3 times to get that right) 200 miles and owned it 2 weeks.

Howl on the alternator sounds plausible. I have it on mine and am changing it out this weekend. If you place a long screwdriver against the alternator and the other side against your ear, you should be able to hear the bearings howling if your mechanic is right. I changed my idler pulleys, tensioners, PAS pump and water pump before I narrowed the noise down to the alternator.

When my first alternator went bad it knocked, sounded like a rod knock.
I removed the serp belt, started the truck and she was quite.
Started spinning pulleys and when I got to the alt, knock, knock...went to AutoZone and bought a rebuilt for under $200.
30 min later I was back on the road.

I have an intermitent ticking, but it is coming from the back of the engine, around where the coils are. Very loud, but them goes away. When I find the answer I will post it.

PS: Just replaced the mounts on my SAI pump. Best $60 I've ever spent, what a difference! It doesn't sound like a jet engine starting up anymore, in fact, can barely hear it. You can get them online for about $12/ea.
